After watching the entertaining movie brought to screen by Steven Spielberg, I read the original novel written by Ernest Cline. The text starts pretty slowly so to say, and the first 100 pages (out of 600) disappointed me to some extent. Things however speed up afterwards, with lots of references to the geek / pop culture of the last three decades, which is actually what kept me captivated despite the stereotypical characters. Without this touch of nostalgia for the 80's / 90's I'm not quite sure I would have been so pleased to read this novel...
